Pico Duarte, the highest mountain in the Caribbean

With its 3,087 meters above sea level, Pico Duarte is the highest mountain in the Caribbean and is one of the most exciting trips for lovers of hiking and nature.
Located in the Cordillera Central, the main mountain range of the Dominican Republic, Pico Duarte can be visited throughout the year, except for periods of drought in which the pitch is forbidden to climbers. Usually the best months are those ranging from December to March.
There are five paths to reach the summit and all provide unrivaled views, stunning views of tropical forests, rivers and streams. The best known are La Ciénaga, Mata Grande and Sabaneta. To reach the trails of La Mata or Ciénaga Grande must travel from Santo Domingo to Jarabacoa (about 145 km). To access the dam Sabaneta must get to San Juan de la Maguana (200 km). It requires an official guide and a mule to carry the baggage that can be rented in the government camp of La Ciénaga. The routes vary from 23 to 45 km and are completed in 2, 3 or 4 days.
On top of the Pico, dominating the landscape, it stands the bronze effigy of Juan Pablo Duarte - one of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic - near the Dominican flag waving and beside a cross.
