Basílica Catedral de Higüey

Located in the main street of the province Higuey, the Basilica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia is one of the most respected throughout the Dominican Republic.
It was designed by French architects Jacques - André Dunoyer de Segonzac and Pierre Dupre, chosen through an international competition in 1947. It was built on 1 April 1959 with the bubble Sollemne east Nobis of Pope John XXIII, is a suffragan of the seat of the Catholic Church Archdiocese of Santo Domingo. It includes the Dominican provinces of El Seibo, La Romana and La Altagracia. The basilica was consecrated by Pope John Paul II October 12, 1992, during his apostolic trip to Santo Domingo.
Majestic, surrounded by a backdrop of palm trees and a large park, keeps inside a glass case, the image of the Virgin of Altagracia, patroness of the Dominican Republic.
